I have a confession to make…
I have a black thumb. Yep- the complete opposite of a green one, y’all.
…and I’m a farmer/homesteader.
Those two things don’t really go hand-in-hand. Ya feel me?
In fact, it’s a running joke in our family that everyone is surprised I can keep my children alive. I know, I know- that seems kind of harsh but let me tell you the backstory.
When I was pregnant with Molli in 2004, my Aunt Mel gifted me one of those cactus plants that comes with the beautiful stones. It was a house warming gift for our new apartment in Boynton Beach, FL.
Well…I killed it. A cactus. In Florida. While pregnant with my first child.
If it wasn’t for Mountain Man then we
probably wouldn’t have anything growin’ on the farm- and that’s just plain sad, people. There is nothing like a home-grown vegetable in my belly. Store-bought vegetables ain’t got nothin’ on a backyard non-conventionally grown veggie, my friends.
Since moving to our new homestead, Mountain Man and I have been planning our new garden. Well- more like I tell him what I want and order it. Then he figures out all the logistics due to my crippling garden skills disease, otherwise known as ‘black thumb.’ But, I was tired of it. I hate feeling left out (unless it’s doing dishes these days) and I wanted to share his knowledge of gardening. So, I started reading ways to simplify our garden.
I ended up buying Ruth Stout’s No-Work Garden Book (buy it here). She had me right at ‘No-Work’ and we are starting a mulch garden this year, baby!
I continued on my newfound “wanna be a gardener” kick and started reading up on how to start seedlings, grow plants, etc. Mama here got a bit overwhelmed with all the info out there, so imagine how delighted, excited, and thrilled I was when Rick from Our Stoney Acres contacted me about his ‘Seed Started Simplified’ online course. Mamma here Mountain Man wanted to literally high-five Rick through my email- especially since we are planning to start our seedlings next Friday. Mountain Man can use all the help he can get when to comes to teaching me about seedlings/gardening.
Seed Starting Simplified- an Online Video Course Review
I ain’t gonna lie to y’all. I was kind of “iffy” if I wanted to do this review for three reasons.
1. I was already overwhelmed by reading so much on gardening the last two weeks, and
2. Would it even keep my interest?
3. I’m really picky about products that I review.
So, before I agreed to do the review I took a peek and watched the course introduction video.
I was sold. I could immediately tell that Rick was an educated, honest, no-frills type of guy. And that reminds me of my Mountain Man.
So, I agreed to do the review.
Rick doesn’t know this yet, but I am pretty sure that him and I are new BFF’s… that is how comfortable he makes you feel in this video course. Like for real y’all. He doesn’t speak down to you and he starts from the beginning- something I needed. I also love how extremely frugal he is when it comes to gardening because I trim, cut, and save everywhere I can. In fact, Mountain Man and I wanted to get all of this new seedling equipment but just couldn’t justify the price of it all. Rick, though taught me that you don’t have to have all the fancy equipment- and that folks is right up my alley.

Why I Recommend This Course and Give It Five Stars:
Well, of course my first reason is that you will totally gain a new BFF by taking this course. Rick is so easy-going and it feels like he is just sitting in your house chatting it up with ya! He is also very knowledgable.
He has over 15 years of experience in gardening (his first year was an epic FAIL- which I can greatly relate to) and graduated in 2012 from the Utah State University’s Master Gardener program- so he knows what he is talking about, ladies and gents!
Rick also prefers frugality to those expensive gadgets that are for sale when you read about starting seedlings.
The course is simple, easy-to-follow, and Rick’s energy, knowledge, and excitement about starting seedlings makes it very enjoyable.
I seriously learned everything that I ever need to know about starting seedlings- and I didn’t have to read 1,567 different books to gain that knowledge.
For the first time EVER (and that requires shouting) I am so excited to get started planting my seedlings with my main squeeze (Mountain Man, of course) next Friday!
