Bum Balm…AKA Diaper Cream (Cloth Diaper Friendly)

bum balm...AKA diaper cream | The Easy Homestead

For those of us with kiddos we’ve all been there. You go to change your little one’s diaper and WHAM! You are presented with redness and/or a rash. Most parents grab a store-bought cream and slather it on. I know I used to.

But please! DON’T GRAB THAT STORE-BOUGHT CONTAINER. Most are loaded with chemicals and/or toxins that are easily absorbed into your baby’s body.

Chemicals and toxins that are known endocrine inhibitors, carcinogens, and known to cause organ system toxicity, etc. Click here to see what the Environmental Working Group rates a very popular diaper cream (one I even used to own).

Pretty gross huh? Absurd? Yes! Disgusting? Without a doubt.

The fact that this stuff is ALLOWED into the products we put on our children is INSANE. Don’t get me started on store-bought diapers either…another day another post.

Anyhow, we started cloth diapering our second child (J) at 18 months old. At that time we learned that most store-bought diaper creams are NOT cloth diaper friendly. Why?

Because, they will cause the diapers to repel and NOT absorb the baby’s urine.

Most of the time we would just use an extra virgin organic coconut oil in it’s plain ol’ form. Slather some on there and DONE! Right?

Sometimes. But other times the plain ol’ coconut oil wasn’t enough for those stubborn rashes. So what’s a mom to do?

MAKE YOUR OWN! So simple.

‘M’ and I actually whipped this up on a whim (learning while we were taking pictures).  “M’  is 9 and that is such a great age for a little assistant (who sometimes thinks she’s the boss). Wink wink.

She and I made this batch in less than ten minutes from start to finish (including cleanup). Oh, and guess what? It can be used for more than just a baby’s bum bum.

Other things we have used it for:

  • Face rashes. (‘J’ likes to constantly lick his lips and sometimes gets a rash around his mouth)
  • Cuts and scrapes
  • deodorant (yes, I admit it…I ran out a couple of days ago and haven’t been able to make any so I’ve been using this) {The ingredients are the same anyway-just different amounts}

How to Make Bum Balm…AKA Diaper Cream

Supplies Needed:

  • 1/2 cup Raw Unrefined Shea Butter
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Oil
  • 2T Arrowroot Powder

***FIRST, learn from me. Do NOT (I repeat, do NOT) try to mix this in the final container. Start using a small mixing bowl (you will see us switch in the pics). I don’t know what I was thinking, but hey, you learn from my mistakes, right?

***If your coconut oil and shea butter is extremely hard you can add the coconut oil and shea butter to a small saucepan. Heat on LOW just until it softens. This way it makes it easier to work with! Then start with step 3!

1. Put coconut oil in a bowl. It was a warm day so ours was soft!

2. Cut the shea butter. Smash the shea butter so you can measure it. Add to mixing bowl.  Stir until creamy.

3. Add arrowroot powder. Whip with fork until nice and creamy, scraping the powder off the sides as you go.

4. Add to your final container and voila! We used a 4oz glass container. ALL DONE!

Notes:

*** Since there is coconut oil and shea butter in it the weather (or temp of your house) will play a role in how soft or hard the cream will be.  Warmer=Softer. Colder=Firmer.
