Grandma B’s Country Green Beans

Grandma B's Country Green Beans | The Easy Homestead

Before I get down to business, I just wanted to say that we had an AMAZING vacation this past week. Lots and lots of family time, but I really missed you guys and the blog!!

So, today I am sharing my Grandma Branscomb’s country green beans. This is not her exact recipe, but I feel I have done a great job replicating these beans that I have been eating since I was an itty bitty baby.

Every time I eat these it brings me back to my childhood. Happy times on the farm: swingin‘ in the homemade tire swing, laying next to the heater on a cold mornin‘, and giving my grandma a heart attack because my cousin K.J. and I would chase the cows in the field!!

So, as usual, let’s get down to it!!

Grandma B’s Country Green Beans

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 lbs Green Beans
  • 1 cup chopped jowl {or you can use bacon or salt pork}
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 6 cups water
  • 1.5 teaspoons of salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1-2.5 teaspoons of additional salt {added later}

Directions:

1. Wash Green Beans.

gb1

2. Snap the green beans. We only snap the one end that was on the vine, and yes, that is Beau snapping the beans {love that man}!!

gb2

3. Cut jowl into 2 inch pieces.

gb3

 4. Heat pan over medium-high heat. Saute chopped jowl for 5 min, stirring occasionally.

gb4

 5. Add water, broth, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer for 20 minutes.

gb6

6.  Add beans and stir. Bring to another boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Cover. Simmer for one hour.

gb77. Add salt and pepper to taste. We like salty things, so we add 2.5 teaspoons of salt. Let simmer for 5 min. SERVE!
