Natural Psoriasis Treatment

By Jen Sharpin 31 Comments

Natural Psoriasis Treatment | The Easy Homestead***Warning…this post will contain images of psoriasis that I have suffered from. To me, they are embarrassing and gross, but I feel that they are necessary to share my story.

Never in a million years would I have EVER thought that I would need a natural psoriasis treatment for some form of psoriasis. But, as we all know, life is full of surprises.

After the birth of Nanette Lorraine in 2013, at the age of 31.5, my skin started to wreak havoc as all get out. Seriously- it was, and still is embarrassing, shameful, and painful. It first started with horrible acne- that I am still fighting with (but is finally getting better- see below). I figured it was from hormone issues and all that fancy jazz.

Then around the time she was 9 months old, something really odd started to appear on my face. I was mystified, baffled, confused, and it created HUGE self-esteem issues.

Psoriasis on Face/Eyes. No makeup and on a "good" psoriasis day.

Psoriasis on Face/Eyes. No makeup and on a “good” psoriasis day.

This rash looking stuff –that always had the appearance of a bright red, cracked/peeling mess- was on my eyelids, my chin, and the sides of my nose. I had no clue what was on my face or what was causing it. But, I was sure of one thing- NOTHING was making it go away. At this time, soccer season for two of my kids started. I was so embarrassed at the sight of my face that I would sit as far as I could from anyone AND everyone.

I tried not to leave my home as much as I could. I was so thankful to be a stay-at-home-mom and I did my best to not go out into public. I suffered physically and emotionally. My family suffered too. It was awful.

I, of course, did tons of research on the subject and diagnosed myself with psoriasis. I read tons of personal stories from people with psoriasis and I knew that the dr’s usually only made it worse with medications that didn’t work, so I didn’t even waste my money going to one. I wouldn’t have taken the medications anyways. (I ended up going to the dr for another reason- and he confirmed it was psoriasis).

During my research I also learned that psoriasis:

  • May be an autoimmune disease
  • There is no known cause
  • Everything about the “disease” is an assumption
  • That dr’s can only treat the symptoms since the cause of it is unknown
  • That you just have to let it run its course (or so I thought)

Now- we all know that I do NOT and will NOT treat any symptoms in my home with medications. I will use essential oils to alleviate symptoms, but I want to find the root cause of an illness/disease so I can “fix” it.

This began my wonderful adventure of finding a natural psoriasis treatment. By the time I figured out what was on my face it had almost cleared up. I learned that psoriasis just had to ‘run its course’ and that was usually from 3-6 months. Mine was about 4-5 months. After the psoriasis cleared I was thankful- but the acne continued.

At this point I just dealt with the acne because I was thankful that the psoriasis on my face was gone.

FAST FORWARD 5 MONTHS.

I started noticing that I had a lot more “dandruff.”  If I scratched my head it would just fall out. My scalp became itchy all the time. I figured it was all related to hormones and paid it no attention. It wasn’t noticeable, so I didn’t really care. I had never dealt with dandruff my entire life, so I chalked it up to one of those awesome things that happen when you reach your 30s- or after you have your third kid {in my case at least}.

Fast forward 2 months after finding the dandruff.

I was on a conference call and I just reached up and scratched my head. I felt a “bump” on my head. I scratched it. It appeared that a chunk of dandruff came off of it. One day later I noticed what appeared to be a “sore” on my head where that “bump” was. I applied geranium essential oil to it at night. I figured it was just a weird thing and continued on with my daily life.

Then it happened.

I was hanging out with my daughter, Molli, watching a shark documentary. I again scratched my head, but this time I felt something scrape off of my head. I jumped up and looked in the mirror and saw this (pic below). I was MORTIFIED- to say the least.

Scalp Psoriasis

 I did what any girl would do and started freaking out. I went to the bathroom to pick away at it. It was sticky, yellow, and gross. As I was picking away at it, a huge chunk of hair fell out- and left me with a small bald spot. I started having horrible flashbacks to when I had alopecia as a kid.

My bald spot caused by psoriasis

My bald spot caused by psoriasis

I was devastated. I cried. I cried to my kids. I cried to Beau (my husband). I called my older sister {Mary} and text my Aunt Mel- since my mom is dead.  I didn’t know what to do. My mom would have though.

That night I scoured the internet- of course. I learned that I had scalp psoriasis. A light bulb went off. I obviously suffer from psoriasis and it can appear anywhere on your body. It started on my face and it is now on my scalp.

It started like the above. I wasn’t going to let psoriasis win this time- again.

I researched and researched and researched some more. I came up with a psoriasis treatment/protocol that involves two different ‘sprays,’ probiotics, and diatomaceous earth.

Before we get to the recipes and the treatment protocol, I wanted to share pics with you. My bald spot remains, but I am using essential oils for that too!

From the start of psoriasis on 7/18/14 (left) to two weeks after my treatment 8/5/14 (right).

 Here is what it looked like last week:

scalp psoriasis 4

There is a part on the front of my scalp that has the “dandruff” that all psoriasis starts with. I, of course, am treating it with my natural psoriasis treatment to stop it from building up into the yellow waxy mess.

My natural psoriasis treatment includes a protocol of four different things. I know this seems like A LOT- but I think that the pictures speak for themselves. And if you are suffering from any form of psoriasis, I know that you are willing to do anything to get rid of it! I’ve been there.

Natural Psoriasis Treatment

I have found that a combination of three things that have helped clear my acne AND my psoriasis! Bam! The natural psoriasis treatment protocol that I follow contains:

  • Two homemade sprays (see below)
  • Water kefir or kombucha (for probiotics)- OR you can buy probiotics {buy from Amazon here}
  • FOOD-GRADE Diatomaceous earth- taken internally with my water kefir {buy from Amazon here}

 Directions for use follow.

Spray Bottle #1: Apple Cider Vinegar Spray

  • 2 oz Amber Glass Spray Bottle {buy from Amazon- here} – Come in pack of 6!
  • Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar– has to be with the ‘mother’ {buy from Amazon- here}

Fill bottle with Apple Cider Vinegar. Done!

Spray Bottle #2: Essential Oils and Carrier Oil Spray

  • 2 oz Amber Glass Spray Bottle {buy from Amazon- here}
  • 3 Tablespoons Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO) {you can use any carrier oil such as- almond, jojoba, olive oil}
  • 10 drops Geranium essential oil
  • 5 drops Frankincense essential oil
  • 4 drops Bergamot essential oil
  • 4 drops Cedarwood essential oil
  • 3 drops Melaleuca essential oil
  • 3 drops Patchouli essential oil
  • 1 drop Clove essential oil
  • 1 drop Oregano essential oil

Add carrier oil and essential oils to spray bottle. Shake before EACH use.

Here is the daily/bi-daily routine that I follow:

Morning (daily):

  • Drink 1/2 cup water kefir or kombucha with 1 Tablespoon diatomaceous earth (start with 1 teaspoon and increase weekly until you reach 1 Tablespoon). If you choose to take a probiotic, rather than drink water kefir, then take your probiotic and add the DE to another beverage. Your probiotic AND DE should be taken FIRST thing in the morning, prior to anything else being put in your stomach- THIS IS CRITICAL!
  • Drink a FULL glass of water (critical after drinking DE powder)
  • Spray essential oil spray bottle on psoriasis (unless it is scalp psoriasis- then only use at night because it will leave your hair looking greasy- if you stay home then feel free to use it in the AM!)

Night (daily):

  • Spray essential oil spray bottle on psoriasis. If it is scalp psoriasis, make sure that you massage it into your scalp. The “greasiness” look will wash out of your hair in your morning shower

EVERY TWO DAYS- Prior to shower:

  • I spray my psoriasis with the apple cider vinegar spray 10 minutes to 3 hours PRIOR to my shower. The longer the better- but sometimes I forget until about 10 min before!

***Please Note: Use this in a well ventilated area. The ACV (apple cider vinegar) is strong. My kids say “ewwww.” You can dilute it 50/50 with water, if needed. I choose to go full force and NOT dilute it- works quicker. If you dilute it then shake before each use.

    My wife has this problem as well and her Dr. prescribed Betamethasone Dipropionate cream (.05%). In 3-4 nightly applications the psoriasis is gone. Cost around $20 and no side effects.

      Hi Gerald! Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. The cream that the Dr. prescribed your wife is a steroid cream. While it may help it go away the first time, I have found in my research that a steroid cream is the worst medication that can be prescribed for psoriasis. However, it is what is commonly prescribed.

      As stated in the post- Dr’s will only treat the symptom by covering it up with an oral medication or a cream. If you read through testimonials and/or experiences from people that have used a steroid cream with their psoriasis, when their psoriasis reappears (as we know it will), it causes their psoriasis to come back- with a vengeance.

      There are also many side effects to taking a prescribed steroid. We try to avoid rx steroids at all costs in our home :).
      I am glad that your wife has found relief of her symptoms. Thanks for stopping by!

    I should really invest in some Essential Oils – I would love something more natural to treat this terrible annoyance. I have found that taking Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil (my doctor told me to take Krill Oil which didn’t work as good as the Salmon Oil) but I’ve also been prescribed steroid cream and it really does seem to make it come back with a vengeance. I looked at pictures of people who used Steroid Creams for years and their psoriasis is worse now than it was to begin with. It may work temporarily but long term it isn’t good to depend on (in my experience anyway).

      Stephanie,

      I am so sorry that I haven’t responded sooner- I have been without a computer for almost two weeks. The kiddos broke my screen! It’s been crazy! I would love to send you a sample packet of doTERRA essential oils. Shoot me an email at jen (at) the easy homestead (dot) com and we can chat!

    I’m really glad I saw this post after looking at your pumpkin puree. My husband has psoriasis (on his hand and feet). I know from his experiences just how little anyone knows about the ‘disease.’ He’s pretty much given up on anything improving it, so I will talk to him about your essential oil treatment when he returns home from sea next month. I really hope he decides to give it a try!

    Hi, bless you for telling your story and being brave enough to show pics, we all have things we feel embarressed about loving yourself is important. I have had psoriasis since I was 7 after an accident and I am now 47, I have just discovered Diatomaceous earth and after drinking it and applying it on my knees and legs it has improved my psoriasis in just one week. I am just going to start ACV as I used to take it but now with the DE as you have suggested I will have a glass of that as well. I know they say psoriasis can also be linked to cancer and as we are all becoming aware that cancer is a fungus, I had candida as well and I think there is a doctor called simoncini who discovered that every one that passed from cancer had one thing in common and that was candida overgrowth. I had cancer in 2011 so this fits me. You can tell if you have candida albicans by doing a simple test. Take a glass of water to bed, don’t drink it, leave it there till the morning, then first thing, work up saliva in your mouth and spit in to the glass of water, don’t move the glass around, leave it for about 15 mins, after returning, if the salive has settled on the top you don’t have candida, if it sinks or has legs spidering to the bottom you have candida. Diatomaceous Earth cleared this for me in just a few days, it cleared all the yeast and bacteria from my body and I felt amazing. Another sign of yeast overgrowth is to look at your tongue, is it pink and healthy or a pasty white coating all over or at the back, which is reminiscent of a yeast/ candida overgrowth. Cancer is becoming more common today more than ever and if it really is to do with candida, clearing out your gut and intestines is the first root to being healthier. The next step is the alkaline, most of us have acidic diets and so working your body up to an alkaline state will keep you healthy. Apple Cider Vinager can help with returning your body to an alkaline state so can DE both taken regularly and reduce acidic foods. Also bicarbonate of soda can return your body to an alkaline state. Wherever there is alkalinity there is no disease. Thank you for reading and good luck to all the psoriasis sufferers and hope you can wave goodbye to itl

      Wow. I agree with you 1,000%. We have started to make alkaline water. We put 2 drops of lemon essential oil and a pinch of real salt into 1/2 gallon of filtered water and let it sit for 12 hours before drinking. My mom died 2.5 years ago, at the age of 50, from cancer. I did the spit test last year and I do suffer from candida overgrowth. This and my moms cancer are the main reasons we have started doing what you mentioned above. Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by, read, and comment.

    Is the Melaleuca the spray calls for Melaleuca Quinquenervia or Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)? Not sure what the difference in those two are, but want to make sure to get the right one. THANKS!

    Hello, Jen! Thank you for this article. I, too, suffer from a relatively severe vase of psoriasis. I’ve tried so many remedies with little no results. I’m really looking forward to the addition of diatomaceous earth.

    My question for you is where do you list/describe the second spray? I can only locate the mention of ACV. Is your second spray where you include eo’s? I would love to know which you use and how (carrier oils, etc).

    Thank you so much for your time.

    Hi there! Just found your post. I have suffered from psoriasis in varying degrees for the past five or so years. I have it chronically on my scalp and elbows and various spots on my body. That’s fine, I can deal with that. What I can’t deal with is the fact that it has completely broken out on my entire face. Chin, upp the lip, cheeks, and forehead. It hurts and my skin feels thin, tight, and constantly burning. I have tried so many things for my psoriasis. I am wondering if the sprays you listed above are safe to use on my face? And do you dilute the acv? Also I have never heard of de, what is that?
    Thank you.

    Jen, I’ve been treating my psoriasis (scalp) naturally for years, but I have never found this remedy. Did some research on diatomaceous earth (my husband uses it in his work so I’m familiar with it) and the Dr. Axe website really likes it. I’ll have to try it if/when my psoriasis flares again. I’ve found that the key is keep all inflammation in the body down. I also, unfortunately, have psoriatic arthritis. In my early 40s it started triggering easily. While everyone wants to blame wheat (or the chemicals on wheat) I found that my triggers were corn and nightshades (a common arthritis trigger). If I don’t eat those items (yes, it’s hard. I very much miss Mexican food) the inflammation in my body is greatly reduced. If, with your DE treatments, you are still just keeping it in check I’d recommend a elimination diet. I did “The Virgin Diet”. I don’t agree with everything in the book (she pushes her own line of supps) but it was a good guide on how to and how to test the foods once you are “clean”. I’m so glad I found this. I have a friend in need of it.

    Are you struggling to treat Psoriasis? Are you frustrated by being unable to control and prevent your Psoriasis condition despite all your efforts? If you answered yes, then I know exactly how you feel, because I have personally gone through the same experience. I battled my severe Psoriasis for more than a decade until I finally found a treatment and healed it permanently.

    thankyou so much for this! my Dr prescribed a handful of cortisones & refused to give me a referal to a dermatologist until id try the prescriptions..which i tried one of them once & realized i barely have hair as it is (my hair is super thin & been falling out more & more with all 3 pregnancies i had). My Dr was convinced it was from stress, since my anxiety has also gone up after having 3 kids lol but its been so embarassing because you can see my white scales through my hair & my hair hurts as if it were in a pony tail for days! i make a smoothie every day (for constipation issues mostly lol), do you think adding the diatomacious earth will be fine added to it? what oils have you had hair growth success with? sorry for all the details..im just so glad to find someone who also uses Doterra and prefers a natural approach to something like this too! ive been hoping this would just pass on its own, but its been 10 months & the scales keep regrowing & my self esteem is starting to suffer as more hair falls out with the ‘scabs’ lol
